Chapter Twenty-Eight
I did my morning fence check on the ATV and didnât find anything out of order. No dead bunnies either.
When I got back to the barn, Zoey was waiting for me on the ground floor.
âFind anything?â
âNo, no problems. Everything looks good.â
âGood. Iâve got another job for you. Follow me.â
She led me to the door next to the one where we stored the ATVs. She tapped her phone and the door opened the same way as the ATV garage door had. Inside, the walls were lined with shelves containing spare parts, tools, cans of oil, grease, as well as an assortment of brooms and mops.
Pointing to a locker near the back wall, she said, âThatâs where we keep our wet gear. Rubber boots, gloves, and waders. Youâll need them for your next job. Put them on and meet me outside.â
She left me wondering why I needed to put on waders and boots. Rather than wait for her to come back and tell me, I found a pair of waders and put them on. They were the one-size-fits-all kind that you put on over your clothes. The wader part covers your legs and comes up to your chest. Two straps going over your shoulders hold them in place.
With the waders on, I dug through the locker and found a pair of rubber boots, size twelve. A little bigger than I normally wear, but they would do. I grabbed a pair of rubber gloves and headed out to meet up with Zoey.
She was standing on the other side of the barn door, holding a pump-action twelve-gauge shotgun. Looking up at me in my boots and waders, she smiled. âThatâs a good look for you. Maybe you ought to add some of those to your wardrobe.â
Before I could think of a good comeback, she pointed to a small two-wheel flatbed trailer. It had six-inch safety rails all the way around and a steel mesh floor. Probably five-foot wide and six feet long. The kind used to haul a riding lawn mower around. âWeâre going to hitch that up to one of the ATVs, and youâre going to ride in it.â
That didnât sound right to me. âWhat? I have to ride in the trailer? Why canât I ride up front with you?â
She grinned. âYouâre going to be getting muddy and I donât want you messing up the ATV. After youâre done with what weâre going to do, Iâm pretty sure youâll want to ride in the trailer on the way back.â
Sheâd left it up to my imagination as to what was in store. With the chest waders and rubber boots, I hoped it didnât involve cleaning out a septic tank. Maybe thatâs why she was carrying a shotgun. To convince me to do whatever she had in mind. I shuddered.
She pulled her ATV up next to the tiny trailer and I hooked it up for her. After checking that I had done it to her satisfaction, she said, âJump in and hang on.â
I shook my head.
